3d printing

Questions for David St. John regarding the future of 3d printing technology as he sees it:

3d printing technology enables people to rapidly (& relatively inexpensively) physically realize ideas in ways that were impossible until fairly recent history. Where do you think the trajectory of this technology is headed?

Do you imagine that 3d printers will become as accessible as inkjet printers are today with every household owning one and printing whatever objects it needs? Or do you see this technology as more targeted for design/fabrication professionals without broader utility for a wider audience?

Project 1: Cookie Cutter

For the first project, I chose the form of a classic sloop sailboat as the basis of my cookie cutter design. I traced the outline of the image at the right and created outlines for the cabin trunk, mast, boom and sails to imprint into the dough, without cutting all the way through. On the mainsail, I decided to have my initials imprint in the place of the builder symbol and number. As my first cookie cutter design and without careful consideration of all the parts, it leaves a little to be desired. The hull and sails often disconnect because the mast connection is too thin and the stern of the hull tapers too dramatically, making it difficult at times to remove from the cutter. It would benefit from further iterations but proved a good learning experience and made some delicious cookies.
